English Harbour has served as a working naval base since the 18th century, when the British Royal Navy—under a young Horatio Nelson—used its narrow, hurricane-protected entrance to shelter and repair fleets. The Georgian-era buildings from that period still stand today as Nelson’s Dockyard, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the only continuously operating Georgian dockyards in the world.
Antigua and Barbuda gained independence in 1981, and that maritime heritage carries through to today’s charter season. Every April, Antigua Sailing Week draws sailboats and their crews from around the world to English Harbour for one of the Caribbean’s most prestigious regattas—a good marker if you’re timing a charter around the island’s liveliest week on the water.”
