IT’S FOR ECO-FRIENDLY CHARTER YACHTS

Most professional charter yacht crews in the Caribbean charter fleet participate in what is called Friendly Green Initiatives Charters program. They are committed to using resources that will ensure they are not destroying the sea we all love.

Important to remember when planning a sailing vacation is that you want the sea and surrounding atmosphere to stay clean. This helps to preserve marine life that we love to observe.

Reducing Plastic Waste

We all know that plastic waste is not only toxic for human beings, but also harmful to marine life. Each year, more than 100,000 marine mammals die partly because of plastic waste dumped into the sea.

In a perfect world, it would be nice if every charter yacht would participate in the Friendly Green Initiatives Charters program. They could desalinate their own water and distribute it in refillable bottles. That way rather than using plastic bottled water each time someone feels thirsty.

You might want to check if the yacht you are planning to charter has signed up to reduce the use of plastic waste to cut down garbage accumulation during your trip.

Lowering CO2 Emissions or Buying Carbon Credits

The best way to avoid polluting the sea is to charter a sailing yacht. This is because a sailboat charter uses wind energy to take you from one place to another rather than any combustible fuel.

When using a motor on a yacht, carbon dioxide is emitted which pollutes the air. Although one motor yacht might produce a ridiculously small amount of carbon dioxide, when an area such as a busy bay or harbor is overwhelmed with such yachts, it poses a real threat to the sea as well as the marine life.

Sustainable Energy Yachts

Recently, the idea of building solar powered yachts with space age designs and materials is becoming more popular. I even saw an article the other day about a solar powered outboard, now wouldn’t that be wonderful on a small inland lake.

Solar energy allows a yacht to be powered with a sustainable form of energy. There are ‘Hybrid Yachts’ that use electric motors instead of gasoline.  On this type of yacht the props recharge the batteries as they sail through the sea.

These are the initiatives that a few bareboat companies are trying to keep the sea and the surrounding atmosphere clean. A tip of the hat to them.

It should also be noted that charter clients should be equally responsible for playing their part in reducing air and sea pollution. They need to watch for anything that might pose a threat to the sea and its marine life.
